More Than a Venue
Boathouse Backstory
Best known locally as The Boathouse, the Stan Pocock Rowing Center is home to Bainbridge Island Rowing (BIR). Built by volunteers, donors, and generations of rowers, today our working boathouse is home to more than 200 active members.
Our namesake honors an exceptional boat builder and legendary coach. Stanley Richard Pocock (1923-2014) was a remarkable figure in the world of rowing in the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
Born and raised in Seattle, Stan had an early connection with rowing as both an oarsman at UW and as a boatbuilding apprentice with his father, George – a pioneer in the world of building racing shells.
The Pocock family has generously partnered with Bainbridge Island Rowing to name our new facility The Stan Pocock Rowing Center to honor the memory of Stan. All those who enter his legacy boathouse will have the opportunity to learn the history of rowing and find their own heart.
Bainbridge Island Rowing (BIR) is a 501(c)(3) organization working to build a multi-generational Kitsap County rowing community from our home base at the Stan Pocock Rowing Center on Eagle Harbor.
From humble beginnings with a single crew in 2001, BIR has changed an untold number of lives through the positive physical, psychological, social and sporting impact of rowing. BIR’s current membership ranges in age from 13 to 91 and includes 200+ individuals across all rowing skill and experience levels.
Today BIR is proud to call the Stan Pocock Rowing Center home. Ours is the first permanent rowing center serving Kitsap County and the West Sound region. Having a centrally located boathouse in Waterfront Park was made possible thanks in no small part to our community partnerships with the City of Bainbridge Island and the Bainbridge Island Metro Parks & Recreation District.
